Surprise! Baldur'southward Gate: Dark Brotherhood is out now on PC
Leap into some noughties console hack and slash action
Before this year, Blackness Island Studios and Interplay Entertainment appear they were porting the erstwhile 2001 hack and slash Baldur'southward Gate: Dark Alliance to PC and consoles. Information technology came out on PlayStation back in summertime, alas they didn't give a date for PC. Merely, surprise! It's today! PC folks can finally try out the Baldur'south Gate that console users first experienced 20 years ago. I did a full playthrough this summer and had a lovely fourth dimension, at the expense of my partner, who I made sit through one of the jankiest couch co-op games in being.
To be totally clear, I love Dark Brotherhood. It's an action-RPG set in Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms, and follows three heroes taking on an evil warrior who's trying to destroy the urban center of Baldur's Gate using a tower that controls the elements. Classic fantasy stuff.
On Steam, the game supports Remote Play so you lot tin can exercise some long altitude two-player co-op. I highly recommend playing it with a friend as well, the characters aren't actually designed for solo play (much like D&D), and it'southward just way more fun dragging a pal along with you.
It is worth mentioning, however, that this is a port of a 20 year-old game that was already pretty janky 20 years ago. The levelling organisation isn't very counterbalanced, bosses on normal way are damage sponges that will one-shot you, the weapons and armour are rather ugly, and there are long stretches where you're just slapping enemies through seemingly never-ending dungeons.
Like, it's a good game that I have a lot of nostalgic honey for, and I absolutely think information technology's worth giving a become - if only so that if they eventually port the sequel to PC, you lot take some background on the story. Baldur's Gate: Nighttime Brotherhood 2 improves on the first one and then much, with tighter level blueprint, more interesting story beats, and loads more than customisation (my favourite is enchanting weapons using gemstones you find in the globe). I really really promise they port that one, it was 1 of the first games I ever played.
Baldur'southward Gate: Dark Alliance is bachelor on PC right now, via Steam, GOG and the Ballsy Games Shop, priced at £30/€thirty/$xxx. It'south as well already out on new consoles, if you'd prefer.
